Hiring the perfect team member seems like an ongoing battle. However, by following our recommended hiring practices, you can put your best foot forward during the interview and onboarding process for a new hire.

Initial Phone or Virtual Interview:

Reach out to the candidate to set up an initial phone or virtual interview. Use this time to screen the candidate and determine if they align with what you are searching for in a team member.

  1. Do the hours align with what the candidate is looking for?
  2. How far of a commute would the candidate have?
  3. What attracted the candidate to apply?
  4. Discuss what their experience was like at their last place of employment.
  5. What is the candidate looking for in a new position?

In Person Interview:

The candidate has passed the initial screening and you have invited them to see the practice and meet the team.

  1. Prepare your current team for the arrival of the candidate.
    1. Make sure everyone is positive, friendly and upbeat. (Remember, this is the first impression the candidate will have of the practice.)
  2. Greet the candidate upon arrival. Offer a beverage if available and give the candidate a quick tour of the office.
    1. Be sure to introduce other team members along the way.
  3. Review what a typical day would look like for the candidate.
  4. Ask any questions pertaining to the position you are hiring for.
  5. Be sure to ask the candidate if they have any questions, too.

Hiring:

  1. Draft offer letter.
  2. Present an offer letter to the employee, this can be in person or sent via email with a request to have a follow-up phone call.
  3. Decide on hiring date.
  4. Map out and present training protocol and schedule.

Onboarding:

  1. Create a first day experience.
  2. Ensure that someone from the office checks in regularly during their first 2 weeks.
  3. Dr/Practice manager take out to lunch after 2 weeks to have dedicated check in time and invite feedback from candidate on what is going well and what they need clarification on.
